Within our setting, all children are supported in developing their potential at their own pace. Our key person system enables us to provide planning to meet the needs of each child. By means of developmentally appropriate play activities and adult input, we offer a curriculum that helps children progress towards and prepare for the recognised Learning Goals.
COMMUNICATION & LANGUAGE
In small and large groups, children are encouraged to extend their vocabulary and fluency by talking and listening and by hearing and responding to stories, songs and rhymes.
Children are helped to understand that written symbols carry meaning, to be aware of the purposes of writing and as they are ready, to use drawn and written symbols for themselves. A well stacked book corner gives every child the opportunity and encouragement to become familiar with books, be able to handle them and be aware of the uses, both for reference and as a source of stories and pictures.
With adult support and practical experience children become familiar with sorting, matching, ordering, sequencing and counting activities that form the basis of early maths. As they use their developing mathematical understanding, children are assisted to use mathematical vocabulary, understand concepts such as size, position, volume and number. Songs, games and picture books help awareness of operations such as adding.
UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD
Safe and stimulating environment allows children to explore and experiment with a range of natural materials. They learn to recognise patterns, differences, similarities and features of objects, to share and record their findings. Children are assisted and supported as they find out about their environment, within the group and the community. They extend their familiarity with I.T and use simple tools to achieve intentions and to problem solve.
PERSONAL, SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Within a nurturing environment, children are individually supported in developing confidence and self-respect. They are encouraged to work and concentrate individually and as part of a group, to share and co-operate with adults and children alike. Through activities, conversation and example they learn acceptable ways to express feelings and have respect for those of others. All children are given opportunity, as appropriate, to take responsibility for themselves, the group, other individuals and property.
A range of equipment and opportunities, both indoors and outside, allows children to develop confidence and enjoyment in the use and development of their own body skills. A high level of adult supervision enables children to safely meet and create physical challenges, with increasing control in movement, climbing and balancing. Fine motor skills are developed to enable more effective use of pens and pencils, tools and handling small objects.
EXPRESSIVE ARTS & DESIGN
Children are encouraged to use a wide range of resources in order to express their own ideas and feelings, in two or three dimensional art, using paint, glue, crayon, felt tip, pencil, natural and recycled resources. They can explore colour, shape and texture. Children respond to music and stories, in role play and imaginative opportunities, both individually and as a group.
We always have a theme, which is displayed on the notice board near the fire exit in the main hall. We may ask that contributions of help or relevant items on loan ( eg photographs) be made via the newsletter. We make special occasion cards and have activities for recognised festivals but if you feel that any of these are not appropriate to the preferences for your child, please inform us.
